Community is Essential is an extension of the Adult Swim Mural Project, an ongoing exhibition that highlights Black artists through the production of murals around their local communities. The artists in this exhibition—Jade Meyers, Morrah Burton-Edwards, and Nik Richard—came together to create a three-part mural design showcasing the strength and resilience of the New Orleans community.
Morrah Burton-Edwards is an 18-year-old artist from New Orleans who loves to paint large-scale works and take on ambitious projects that help her grow as an artist. She created this mural to honor the perseverance and represent the people of New Orleans as one, resilient family.
In the imagery, the older woman represents the anchor of the community that provides support, and the figures in the middle represent the two upcoming generations that guide the future. The Fleur De Lis at the bottom contains a seed that represents the future generations and how they will bloom.
