Living Walls seeks to change the industry of public art by creating more space, visibility, representation & celebration for women, people of color, and LGBTQIA+ voices. Founded in 2010, we have produced over 500 works of public art in Atlanta and beyond, working with artists from all over the world.

From start to finish, we develop projects that strive for the equitable futures of our communities and speak at the intersection of arts, culture, and societal change.

Monica Campana
Co-Founder & Executive Director

monica@livingwallsatl.com

[She/Her] Monica Campana, a native of Peru, moved to the US when she was 15 in 1998 but continued to feel like a visitor in her overlooked part of town well into adulthood. Her artistic skills and desire to find home led to street art - which introduced her to a different way to see the city she lived in while giving her a new sense of empowerment.

Soon after that, she used those artistic and organizational skills to create Living Walls, The City Speaks, a nonprofit organization that uses art to catalyze conversations about art as a tool for social change and operates at the intersection between art, social justice, and economic development.

We envision a world where public art acts as a social and economic engine, providing an artistic workforce that commits to healthy, sustainable spaces for the communities we serve.

We envision a future where public art is foundational to the growth and evolution of cities and channels the spirit and culture of local communities.

  • We strive to foster equity and empowerment by curating and producing public art that centers diversity and inclusion–within our teams and through intentional imagery–in order to dismantle systemic issues and strive for the co-liberation of artists and communities we serve.

  • We show love and care by encouraging and creating safe spaces, understanding that hard work is driven and affected by mental and emotional health, and doing our best to nurture the health of our team, artists, and communities.

  • We hold space to foster visibility, celebration, and investment in women, people of color, immigrants, and the LGBTQIA+ community through the artists we work with and the work they produce. We believe that by amplifying intersectional experiences, we can create modern monuments that celebrate the diversity within our communities.

  • We prioritize the distribution of tools, resources, and knowledge to those who have been most excluded as a way to collectively protect our creative community. We practice this transfer of power through training in production, hosting workshops, and sharing resources and opportunities.

  • We believe in the power of inclusive and intentional public art to evoke change. Our work demonstrates the ways that art can convey complex and revolutionary innovations, visualize an equitable future, and speak at the intersection of arts, culture, and societal change.

  • We commit to fighting systems of oppression by responding to issues of social justice with intentionality, love, and care, striving to create solutions by taking up public space with art that reclaims power and advocates for a more fair, just, and kind world.

  • We stand for the right for all of our artists and assistants to be fairly compensated. Producing public art is demanding work that, like all works and processes of art, deserves fair compensation and credit. We respect the process, time, and experiences of the artists we work with in hopes for them to be empowered in their careers.
