“Aspara”

by KILLAMARI
for Laura Patricia Calle Grant
📍 Decatur, Ga

This work is inspired by Khmer culture with a modern twist. As a Cambodian, KILLAMARI has always seen these Aspara figures throughout Cambodian/Khmer religion and mythology—beautiful and powerful female figures often compared to angels or valkyries.

KILLAMARI is a freelance illustrator and designer based in Atlanta, specializing in character-based illustrations and designs. He likes drawing wacky characters and creating vibrant worlds by mashing together Khmer culture, street art, monsters, martial arts, and yummy eats! Killamari has developed a dynamic aesthetic that is immediately recognizable, bursting with invigorating characters that bridge the gap between innocent and sinister. Not one to play favorites with mediums, he uses a range of tools to suit his needs, from the essential ink pen and paper to spray paint.

As a husband and a father to a beautiful baby girl; I owe a lot of my happiness and support to strong women in my life. To paint an Apsara has been a great chance to pay my respects to my culture and to the women in my life.
